Holly,
it must have been that spine surgery in 2008 that I had forgotten about this page. Either way, so glad I found it again.. Leave to my good friend google to reconnect me with my friends.. Miss and love you!
Love it all! I was thinking about my father, a fine sax player who hit Manny's fairly frequently, buying strings for his guitarist, the great Buddy Merrill, and reeds for himself. He seemed to spend a lot of the time gabbing it up at the counter. In '75 or so, when my first guitar, a new J-50, was stolen from my college apt in Albany, we trucked on down to Manny's. A friend had been playing a great sounding Goya dread, so I was fixated on having one. When I asked at the counter, the older white haired clerk, I'm assuming Manny himself, reached around behind and barely leaving his seat whipped out a '66 blonde S-18 in good shape. A hundred bucks, a handful of picks, and I had a fine guitar and another sweet memory.
Since then I've owned many fine vintage acoustic guitars and wonder how many might have passed through those doors. Joyously claustophobic! Wish I kept track of my Manny's picks. Might have swallowed one or two.
Enjoying the site. Big thanks!
Love!
I grew up a Sam Ash kinda guy. Growing up in Queens, the Hempstead Sam Ash was more convenient. Although as a kid it was always exciting to go into the city and go into Manny's. While in my early teens I saw Gene Cornish of the Young Rascals in there. He autographed a Manny's business card for me. I wish I still had it. Later in life I realized just how great a store Manny's was. Everyone who was someone shopped in there. I am happy to say I bought two high priced DW drum sets in Manny's in 2003 and 2006. Over the weekend I was in the city and stopped in Sam Ash ( formely Manny's ) and bought a Manny's Music tee shirt. I can't wait to wear it into my local Guitar Center.
I'll never forget my first trip to Manny's. To see those photos on the wall...That yellow Danelectro which I thought was just about the coolest guitar! I remember going in to buy a wa wa before my first session. So many memories.I still have those old Manny's picks around. Manny's is a New York institution!
