I remember Manny's well. As a little hippie teenager, I spent many an hour window shopping there longingly. Eventually, I bought my first guitar, a Guild Starfire, there, and many instruments and accessories since then. I remember being thrilled to see Zal Yanovsky, of the Lovin' Spoonful in front of Manny's, where he graciously autographed my bus pass.
I never made the wall of fame, even though as a sideman I appeared with a number of luminaries, notably Madonna and Suzanne Vega.
As I branched out into synth programming and engineering, Manny's continued to supply me with instruments, such as my Oberheim DX, Juno 60 and Korg M1. I believe I bought my very first Tascam Portastudio there.
As I continued to refine and re-invent my career in music, Manny's was the unfailing supplier of the latest and greatest tools.
I will miss Manny's. Of the bigger 48th St. retailers, they were the one that was cool.

You sold me my first guitar, a Guild Starfire, approximately 45 years ago. The guitar is long gone, sold by me to David Reiff, noted intellectual now, but an impossibly bright high school kid at the time.
I'm sure you don't remember the sale, as since then you must have sold hundreds, if not thousands of guitars to people much better known than myself. I was just another teenage kid who would haunt Manny's, mostly to gawk, only occasionally to buy. I might look vaguely familiar-…
