Before the popularity of the electric guitar and before every teenager
with a rock 'n' roll dream had a band in their garage, Manny's Music in
New York City was providing the hardware for swing stars and big bands,
and establishing itself as the place to go for the musician in the
know. Besides being a garden of delight for musicians looking for the
latest gear, Manny's became a center of activity where stories and tips
were swapped among superstars and budding musicians alike. The Wall of
Fame is not only for anyone who has ever bought a guitar or played in a
band, but for fans and music history freaks who want insight into a
side of the music world hardly ever seen by non-musicians. It's for
whoever wondered where Buddy Holly got his Stratocaster . . . or where
Jimi Hendrix got his. Manny's was a place where you could almost feel
the spirit of those musicians whose photos adorned the walls. I
treasure my experiences in this wonderful place.--Carlos Santana

It makes me smile the way I felt when Henry gave me my first "Schlepper" shirt.
I have to laugh when I notice people speaking about "Abruptness" at Manny's. Being Jewish and from New York I guess I understood it better than most. I begged for every "Schlepper" shirt I ever got. I might have been an important Road Manager in my head but to Henry I was just a Schlepper, basically a putz with the good luck to be in the Music Business. He always treated me like a Nephew that he could not resist the opportunity to give a hard time to. I almost cry thinking of when my apartment burned down with my Gibson LG1 in it and then when Blood Sweat and Tears sent me down like a kid in a candy store to pick out a replacement at Manny's, Henry went into the back and brought out one of the last of the Martin D-28's made with Brazilian rosewood and said 'Here Kid, see if you like this one". He showed his love by giving you a great deal, the best products, and of course, a hard time in jest.
To a New Yorker like me there was only one Deli, that's Katz's, and only One Music Store that's Manny's. Manny, Henry, Stuart and all of the other members of the Goldrich family were and always will be giants. We knew the names of the gear. They knew the legends behind the gear. They were the Mensches and we were the Putz's that they lovingly allowed into their family business. Our friend John Seabrook from The New Yorker "Guitar Whispering" Robert Earl Keentag:mannysmusic.ning.com,2009-11-14:3071127:BlogPost:75212009-11-14T20:00:00.000ZSandihttp://mannysmusic.ning.com/profile/SandiBachom

Hi, Ian, and many thanks. Yes, of course this would be way back before both our times. But I just thought you'd have heard about the store, being in the family. Attached is a photo of a mute I own that has a Manny's store sticker to verify the Forsyth Street store. This is so strange! how no one remembers the store. When my son Grant was 12 or 13, graduating from middle school, we promised him a guitar. But he had a very specific guitar in mind..it had to be a Les Paul Epiphone, with a sunburst and a Bigsby Arm!

Our friend, a studio guitar player, had patiently trotted him over to Manny's and across the street to Sam Ash to play every guitar on the wall that came close to the specifications. There was a sunburst with no Bigsby (above) and there was a blue one with a Bigsby which we reluctantly put on hold until the big day...his graduation.
For weeks he pleaded, "Please mom, can I have the guitar" but no, it was a graduation present .....end of story!

A week before the 'big day', Grant and I get in the elevator of my building, and I guy get on with a guitar case, a guy had not seen before then, nor since.....

"Is that a Les Paul?" I said exuding more knowledge than I had data to back up. "Yes" he said drolly. When we reached the ground floor he opened the case, and lo and behold...it was the very guitar, the dream spec guitar...the Les Paul Epiphone with a sunburst AND a Bigsby arm! Not only was the guitar for sale, some odd job lot the guy had gotten off of ebay....but it was the same price as the one we had laid away.
Well the greatest guitar story of all time (certainly in Grant's life) doesn't end there....

Now the best part about this next bit, when i interviewed Les Paul below with Joey Reynolds...Joey told him the story of what happened next.

So I knew that Les played at the Iridium every Monday night and that he signed guitars after the show, so Grant and I to the 'axe' up there the next Monday and Les signed it...To Grant Keep Pickin, Les Paul" but as he finished it, his sleeve smeared the marker and the signature was blurred. I mean only cause I'm OCD Mom did it bother me.

Now the fun begins, I call Gibson and wind up going to their luthier in Times Square and he tries to take the signature off, but it won't budge and then he says, let me try one more thing, and I don't know but it was a simple thing and voila, it was clean....so Grant and I schlepped, yet again, to The Iridium and Les signed the guitar for a second time and this one we sealed in some plastic stuff so it's there forever.

But it's such a great story and I'm so grateful I was able to interview Les on the Joey Reynolds Show in 2005 when he was 90...if there was ever an argument for Joyful Aging...it was Les Paul.

In my humble opinion, Les Paul single handedly invented rock and roll. I got to tell him, when, as a girl in Hollywood, listening to the radio it was what was called, "Popular Music"...and then one day, I heard Les Paul and Mary Ford, "How High The Moon" and I was hooked on Rock and Roll for the next 50 years!

Manny's Music, a musical instrument store in New York City opened by Manny Goldrich, closed its doors at the end of May after nearly 75 years of business. The store, long known as a landmark and icon, was a frequent stomping grounds for musicians from the Who to Paul Simon to Jimi Hendrix and had over 5,000 photos of musicians covering the walls.

When filmmaker Sandi Bachom heard that Manny's Music was closing, she decided "there had to be a way to pay tribute to such an important chapter in American musical history closing." So she got introduced to Manny Goldrich's granddaughter, Holly, to discuss filming a documentary. After talking it through, they hit upon a new idea: create a social network on Ning "for lovers of Manny’s to share their memories of a place so dear to their hearts," Sandi said.

Sandi and Holly named their social network Manny's Virtual Wall. Their vision was to scan photos from the walls of the music store and film video interviews with some of Manny's regulars to share on the social network, and they quickly began tracking down musicians to interview for the project. The closing of Manny's and the new social network was even featured in the New Yorker.

Videos on Manny's Virtual Wall play an important role. Sandi has interviewed dozens of musicians and Manny's regulars and uploaded them to the social network, from this clip of James Taylor remembering his first visit to Manny's to Paul Simon reminiscing about buying his first guitar there when he was 12 to Tim Robbins discovering his father's photo on the walls of the store shortly before it closed.

"My favorite are the first interviews I did with Henry Goldrich talking about The Beatles, The Stones and Hendrix, The Who," she said. " This is a man who played such an important role in these musician's lives, all the artists we know as superstars, Henry sold them their first guitars and, in some cases, gave them credit when they had no money so they could buy their first instruments. This is hugely important and a great story to tell."

Sandi has also said that "the best part about the social network is uploading my video interviews the same day, and being able to upload YouTube videos of performances of all the artists we interview or who blog," and she's created Pages to organize multiple videos and other information for each artist featured.

With the help of the Tab Manager, Sandi named the photos tab on the social network the "Wall of Fame," and started uploading the photos that lined the walls at Manny's, including signed promotional shots of The Beatles, U2, and Bob Dylan. Members also began uploading their own photos and memories from Manny's, and even connecting with childhood friends.

"It makes me very proud to have been a part of this, to have facilitated, in some small way, a place to share these feelings, which would have not been possible were it not for Ning," said Sandi."Captmidnite 62" posted on Glenn Hughes Fan Farm Blogtag:mannysmusic.ning.com,2009-07-02:3071127:BlogPost:47812009-07-02T15:00:00.000ZSandihttp://mannysmusic.ning.com/profile/SandiBachom
You name it..they shopped there. The custom of putting artist's photos on the walls was initially to cover up a dodgy paint job but it became a calling card for the store.....I am sure that Glenn is in one of the countless pictures in the store....

Manny Goldrich was a man of many firsts; he was the first white man to sell instruments in Harlem, he was the first to offer a steep discount on manufacturers list prices and he gave musicians credit on a regular basis. His son Henry took over the store in 1968 and ran it for more than 30 years before the family sold the store to Sam Ash who at one time were his biggest rivals. The Rockefeller real estate group has had its eye on the property for years and recently refused to renew the lease which spells the end for an icon.

I remember going into the store for the first time in 1977....the endless rows of guitars was just jaw dropping....I visited there several times over the years and was shocked to hear of its impending closure.
Manny's is--or was--a Manhattan musical institution: the guitar shop of choice for superstars and cognoscenti alike. Binky Philips, who worked there, waves goodbye to Axe Heaven.--Barney Hoskyns, Editorial Director, Rock's Backpages

After 75 years, Manny's Music Store on West 48th St in Manhattan will close its doors forever at the end of this month. Obviously, this is not even a cigar butt on the world's stage of Economic Fallout these days. But, for me personally, and The History of Rock 'n' Roll, this is akin to GM going under.

Simply put, the WORLD shopped there. Musicians and bands didn't go to Manny's. They made pilgrimages to Mecca, aka Manny's. It was impossibly fabulous.

I first walked into Manny's in 1965, at the age of 12, with my Dad. It was, by any of today's standards, a tiny shop, no more than 20 feet wide and about 100 feet deep, it was more like a wide corridor, with a two-step drop halfway back, than a retail establishment. The front 40 feet or so was where the reeds and brass were sold, along side the cashier's stations against the east wall.

Heavy, heavy jazz players would be trying out trumpets or saxes six feet from the front door while stock boys were lugging in thirty Fender guitar amps and three Hammond organs. Older people shopping there would ask for autographs and I had no idea who these horn-players were. God knows who I heard casually riffing at Manny's. To read full article......My brother and I prepared for weeks in the summer of 1966 to make our first trip to the "city" from Astoria to see the guitars at Manny's.tag:mannysmusic.ning.com,2009-06-01:3071127:BlogPost:33452009-06-01T19:30:00.000ZSandihttp://mannysmusic.ning.com/profile/SandiBachom
My brother and I prepared for weeks in the summer of 1966 to make our first trip to the "city" from Astoria to see the guitars at Manny's. My brother and I prepared for weeks in the summer of 1966 to make our first trip to the "city" from Astoria to see the guitars at Manny's. When we got there there was a Rickenbacker just like John Lennon's in the window and we knew we had found the place where our dreams were to become revealed! It took me two years but I bought my first Precision Bass on August 7, 1968 from Henry who was also tending to John Entwistle and Pete Townshend. They were playing the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park that night. Entwistle also bought the same model that I did. Pete played a big box jazz guitar and made some very beautiful music while we all stood around trying not to drool on him! Fantastic day that I'll never forget. I bought more basses and guitars from Henry, Billy and Stuart over the years but I still have and use that first one which changed the course of my life. Thank you to the Manny's family for the music, instruments and great memories.
I worked at Sound City in London in 73, and thought we were cool until a trip to NYC showed me the real deal, I was in awe. Whenever anyone came back from Stateside, the first question was always "d'ya go to Manny's?" I still use a leather strap I bought there on that first visit.
I moved to New York from California in 1968, 41 years ago. My "old man", Stuart Scharf was a studio guitar player and produced Spanky and Our Gang, he wrote "I'd Like To Get To Know You" which was a big hit and he always used to talk about Henry and we used to go buy strings and picks and scoring paper at Manny's and joke about how he constantly had to tune his guitar.

All the studio musicians had 4 and 5 dates a day. In those days you'd walk into A&R or any of the recording studios within a 5 block radius of Manny's, and there would be entire string and horn sections, full orchestras, all superstars, played on every hit record ever made.

All the 'cats' used to hang at Jim and Andy's between dates. There was a phone on each table, a direct line to Radio Registry, which was the service that booked all the musicians.

Henry told me that the Everly Brothers used to come to Manny's, they would give their wives money to shop at Bloomingdale's and they would hang at Manny's for hours.

All the musicians used to have their instruments delivered to Manny's from the factories. Ringo's drums, McCartney and Hendrix's guitars. Henry said he wished he'd kept the boxes, and, he wished he'd had the yellow guitar that he made all of them play...autographed.

But the thousands of pictures on the wall, each with a personal sentiment to Henry or his father Manny, are priceless.

But the thing all the musicians say they will miss the most about Manny's is....the hang!
Dear Henry,
Here is the Martin D-28 you hand-picked for me in 1969. It was a
lucky choice and I keep it in perfect condition. Millions of Bob
Dylan fans hear this guitar on the opening notes of "Tangled Up In
Blue." Thank you for personally helping me pick out this instrument
-- I came all the way from Minnesota to buy it especially from you.
