But for the next two decades, every time I would drop $5K a pop

for PA equipment, TEAC recorders, ADAT machines, Mackie boards,

outboard gear, computer stuff, etc., I would make a point of teasing

him back - " Hey Manny . . . I mean Henry - ya seen any checks this

big recently from the talented Chapins?" He would smile knowingly

at what by then had become our private one-liner.

Side story to the obit story: While Harry was playing Taxi (as yet

unrecorded) for Henry at the store, halfway through he took a call,

and then returned to the ongoing performance - just before making

the quoted comment in the [NYT] obit.

(I think it was $800 or so back then......LOL).....anyway, John tells him "I have a '67 Tele right here for $175...wanna' see it?"....so the kid sits on the curb playing it for maybe five minutes and says "WOW.....nice guitar.....but how do I know it works?".....without batting an eye John says..."That's easy...we'll just go over to Manny's........" on the way over he tells the kid...don't say anything, I'll handle everything !!" as we walk in the door we run into one of our friends that works there Rickey...so John asks Rickey if we can use an amp for five minutes Rickey says "sure no problem" ....there was a lil Pignose amp in the front of the store....John plugs the guitar in, doesn't hit TWO notes and Henry's screaming "C'mon Gatto....you trying that amp or selling the guitar....?".....I lost it, just bust out laughing....so John plays it a little , shows him both pick ups work ......then he asks him...."you got an amp at home?" the kid says no.......John tells him how cool the Pignose is and he should really get one.....long story short....the kid buys the guitar, buys the Pignose, a box of strings, a strap and a guitar cable !!!

The kid leaves the store and Henry leans over and says....."you guys are good, you can work here anytime you want !" and walked away laughing.....I think he made more money than we did !! LOL

I clearly remember being 9 or 10 years old and my parents taking me and by 2 1/2 year old younger brother to manny's for a flat black lacquer Ludwig drum set. a real beauty. a snare, tom, hi-hat, ride cymbal and snare with a throne. bought it from stu, who I believe was manny's son. (my drum teacher ben halpern suggested we go to manny's).

and I recall that manny himself was there, working the crowd with his sales crew in that narrow store.

this was in the old store, before all the office buildings were on 48th st. and before they moved to the new more luxurious space up the street.

must have been back to that store 100 x over the following years, having switched to bass guitar and with my brother now playing 6 string. a migration to manny's with members of whichever band I was in was legendary, something we always looked forward to days in advance.

all of 48th street was electric with music and musicians and music stores from alex' to we-buy and of course, manny's.

but manny's was THE special place. loved grabbing the blue danelectro bass and plugging in, insecure in my playing skills and the thought that the guy next to me could have been....anybody.

I'm pretty sure I bought my sunn coliseum amp there, a monster for sure.....and of course, my les paul bass--mahogany brown and heavy as lead.

it's all different now. not the same, never will be again.

I knew Henry, Judy, the gorgeous Holly, Ian and Judd for many, many years. They were all great people and great to work for. Manny's should've been declared a national landmark due to their history and countless contributions to music and musicians. Very, very sorry it's no longer on 48th street. That store was a destination location for musicians from all over the world for decades and there will never be another place like it. I'll never foret the time's, experiences and mostly, the people I got to know while at Manny's and on 48th street. I am proud to call them all my friends.

I wish nothing but the best for the Goldrichs.

The members of the band were Dave on bass, Tim on drums, Randy on lead guitar. Randy studied classical guitar as a boy. His claim to fame was appearing as a contestant on The Ted Mack Amateur Hour, “I came in second to a dancing horse.” We were college students at a small school in Ohio. Dave was adamant about me buying an electric guitar. He dragged me out of my dorm room and into his car, “C’mon we’re going to Manny’s.” I asked, “Where’s that?” Dave answered, “Forty-eighth Street.” So off we headed, five hundred miles down the road. When we arrived I was overwhelmed by everything about Manny’s, the thousands of instruments, the photos of rock stars, the exorbitant price of a beautiful white Fender Stratocaster. A salesman asked me, “How much do you have to spend?” I showed him my bankroll, “Thirty bucks.” He pointed across the street, “Go to Jimmy’s. Second-hand music store.” I went and bought a raggedy, white Hagstrom II, packed it in the back of Dave’s car and drove back to Ohio. The band dissolved somewhere around its third or fourth month of existence. I wasn’t there for the final break-up. The guys had already made it known that my services were not needed due to a severe lack of focus, i.e., drunken stupors. I showed up for rehearsal one day and the band wasn’t there. I have no idea what happened to that Hagstrom I bought at Jimmy’s. However, years later, I returned to Manny’s on my birthday with a mission. I found an idle salesman and asked, “I just turned forty. Am I too old to buy an electric guitar?” The man declared, “I’m forty-three and still sell them.” I left Manny’s with a beautiful white Stratocaster, the one I coveted years before. At home I plugged my Strat into an amp and began playing the only rock song I remembered, “Hey Joe.” My fingers hurt. I put the guitar back in its case and stored it in a closet. I haven’t played it since but have put it to good use as a model for giant art guitars I create in my workshop. Some of them are eight feet tall, others regulation guitar size, all are made from wood and found objects. I use door hinges for pick-ups, thumbscrews for tuners, swivel glides for volume controls. The guitars can be seen at http://www.garykottscreativewarehouse.com/gary-kott-folk-art-sculpture-guitars

In 1968 I was a junior & had just joined the official Jimi Hendrix fan club at Warner Reprise records with another member of school. A small group of the NYC chapter of the fan club had the finest 'Hendrix-watch' around & we would shadow Hendrix whenever he hung out in the NYC areas, including a few visits to Manny's.

One such visit I remember thoughtfully, because he purchased a wide variety of instruments, among them a trumpet & tenor sax. I thought that to be pretty much out of his character, until about a year later when he spoke briefly at our high school for a small informal assembly & he talked about a new musical concept that Stevie Wonder, Buddy Miles & Todd Rungren had spoken to him about. This concept being that it was possible for a musician to go into a recording studio & track all the instruments him/herself, creating what Stevie described to him as a '4th dimensional' way of experiencing the music.

Today this concept is popular with skilled musicians, but back in those days it was quite thought-provoking among musicians looking to take their music to a higher level.

Hendrix paced around Manny's that day like a 'kid in a candy store'.

been on the road I figured I had seen enough big cities to be prepared for anything. Nothing

prepares you for NYC.

We took the train from our home town of Altoona Pa., into Manhattan. I can only compare

the change to jumping into the ocean in late spring or early fall. Shocking, invigorating and

cold. But not too cold. And you acclimate quickly, or drown. So off to the hotel, and out on

the town. An evening on Bleeker St. in the mid 80's would have made any musician want to

be in NYC.

The next morning the first thing I wanted to do was go to 48th St. ELECTRIC AVE !!!. I'd

heard of it many times on the road. If ya want a deal, and you want to speak to the people

who really know what they're talking about, 48th St. was the place to go. My brother was a

singer, and he already had a microphone, so he wasn't that interested in going uptown. I think

he when to Bleeker Bob's to record shop.

When you walk up the steps of the 48th street station you get Manhattan in all it's glory.

The smell of....well....you know. The noise. The grand hustle and bustle of mid town. I walked

around the corner and directly into heaven. By this point in my life I had worked in two music

stores. And seen quite a few more on the road. But HOLY COW !!! I started at Rudy's and

worked my way up the block.

By the time I got to Manny's I thought there wasn't any more to see. I was wrong. I was

lucky to start where I did because I got the best for last. When I walked in I couldn't believe

that is was louder inside than it was outside. ( it was Sat.) As I came in an older gentleman

walked up to me and asked my what I needed. I said I was just looking. Then I added that

it was my first time in NYC. He grind and patted me on the back and said, "Welcome to New

York kid.....Don't get run over." That was the first time I met Henry.

I walked around and looked at all the pictures. I was floored. All...and I mean ALL...of my

heros were up there. And the all of them were thanking Henry or Stewart or some other some

other person for the best service they could get. I felt like I was on holy ground, and for

musicians, I was. All I wanted at that point was to be so good that I could be up there.

I spent another Three years on the road, and eventually moved to NYC like my older brother

to get in the business of being a rock star. And after a short stint at 48th St Custom Guitar, was

hired to work with some of the finest people I've ever known in my life. Henry and Judy

personify class. Many times you'll hear someone say," He's a class act ". But with Henry and

Judy, it's no act. They are the real deal. Period. I am glad to have had the privilege to know

them and work there. And although I won't ever have the chance to get my picture up there, or

have my guitars hanging there. I will always work to at least deserve it.

Eternalkeys is currently divided into three chapters: Eternalkeys intro (2008) 3 Soundtracks; the Single on piano only "Spirit Beside me" - live (2009); M. D'Ippolito's Eternalkeys (2010) 6 Soundtracks; Eternalkeys 2 (2011) 9 Soundtracks. Eternalkeys is available in all the Best Digital Stores of the World ( I Tunes, Amazon, Napster, E Music, Rhapsody, 7 Digital...and many others), Web Radio, Web zines, Music Channels (Youtube, Myspace, Soundcloud, PureVolume, Soundclick, Reverbnation...), and Blogs, with many Consensus and Fans all over the world.

Mimmo D’Ippolito Starts to study Modern Keyboard / Theory at 11 years old in a private school when he was very young, in the year he continue to play, learn explore and research between many music styles, after he studied Classical Composition.

Eternalkeys Music born from the desire to combine my musical tastes in a consonant, to space, experiment, research, arrange, to have a Trademark right, his own artistic identity and originality, its own world, in general ... the feelings of real life every day from curiosity about the unknown, the mystery and spontaneity.

Where to find the roots Eternalkeys music?
Soundtracks in general (TV, movies, Anime, Video Games BackGround Music ....), In practice the atmosphere "hidden" in the foundations of films, documentaries etc. ... sounds, themes, atmospheres that exist but are not noticed and "compute" easily, some arrangement of a song that usually catches my attention ... this is also the mystery of the sound of Eternalkeys ...

There is a social issue that more than others you hold dearest and therefore inspires Eternalkeys music?
Eternalkeys is a project that highlights melancholic themes, tragic, sad moment and stories of our lives, yet it also inspired by fantastic situations: world of Dream, mind landscapes, … the charm of the mysteries that surround us also, clearly the mystery of the sound is exactly what every Eternalkeys listener expresses a different opinion, mood, and attributes its social theme for each song you listen ...

If there is a composer who inspired Eternalkeys music, what did the left?
The Composers and Musicians in general from whom I have inspired many in this "new" phase of my artistic career ... I do not have a precise reference to the most dependent 'on the type of music, composition, or sound that strikes me ...

If I can tell some composers, projects or everything I say: Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Vangelis, Nox Arcana, Chopin, Massive Attack, Depeche Mode and many others…
