June 1, New York Times Metro Section: Losing a Celebrated Shop and Its Wall of Nostalgia

On the walls of the famed Manny’s Music store near Times Square, photographs of the world’s most renowned musicians hang in varying degrees of condition and age, many featuring personal notes that reflect the quirky personalities of their subjects.

If those walls could talk now, the sounds of lament would be crystal clear. After 74 years, Manny’s — at the heart and soul of Music Row on West 48th Street — closed its doors for good on Sunday.… Continue

Hello. I'm Alexandra Goldrich. I'm the great grandaughter of Manny, the granddaughter of Henry, and the daughter of Ian. First of all, I would like to say about what an amazing job my aunt Holly did on this website. Congrats Holly.

Manny's had always been a fantastic place to be. Lucky for me I got to visit a lot more than other people did. I remember going to work with my dad and dusting the guitars and cleaning the counters. A few years ago, it was "take your daughter to work day;" and i… Continue

Greetings to Sandi from Neville Chesters

Hi Sandi
I met you down at B. B. Kings a couple of weeks ago.
I was the road manager ( Roadie ) for Jimi Hendrix ( along with Gerry Stickles ) and I remember the first thing I did when I got to New York in 1967 was to visit the "One And Only" Legendary Music Store. I bought the first of "many"!!! White Strats for Jimj. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Mannys is an Icon in the history of Music.
My Very Best Wishes.

Hanging at an early age

I would take the Canarsie line from Brooklyn on a saturday and hang on 48th street all day.I'd go into Many's look at the combo organs and amps. You'd never know who would walk through the door and I saw many of the musicians on the NY scene come into Mannys. It's the way it is these days.Time moves on and nothing stays forever. It's good that people will Remember what will always be a NY institution

Some thoughts I wanted to share

Well, this is the beginning of my life....again. For the last 20 years, I have hidden myself, behind the clouds of others; hoping that the Sun would shine through their mist, and bring them closer to, whatever seemed to have evaded me. That all changed for me on April 13th, 2009. Mike Ciro, Gene Perez, Jon Peretz, Emedin Rivera, Al Chez, Kevin Osborne, and Marty Kersich, joined me to reform a wonderful band...".BENNY AND THE SPYDRS".

30 years… Continue

Vagrants and Mountain

Without Manny and Henry we wouldn't have been able to survive. I remember Manny at the original store standing outside drawing people into conversation and inviting them into the store and who can forget Henry's sardonic wit and the love I felt every time I walked into the store. He even gave me a job when I was really down and I am the worst salesman in the world. It truly was a family that included all who came through the doors.

Former Musician Turned Music Industry Attorney

I remember it like it was yesterday, but way back in the early 80s, Manny's was where I bought my first electric keyboard. A Yamaha, no less! (And this was before MIDI) Well, it still works fine today and I use it often to write jazz band charts in my spare time.

Some of you may be interested in knowing that my day job is practicing entertainment law in the music and film industries. I work both sides of the aisle repping small labels as well as recording artists in litigating… Continue

Nothing like Great Old Memories!

Manny's Music Store was THE reason for digging up the $2.67 for a round trip ticket on the NHRR from South Norwalk, CT to Grand Central Station in the late 60's and early 70's. Every town had their fair share of high priced rinky dink music stores, but when it came time to drop your hard earned paper route money for "serious" musical equipment, Manny's was the ONLY place to go! As a young teenager and aspiring guitar player (along with every other boy who saw the Beatles on Sullivan) the… Continue

Regret!

The greatest regret of my entire professional life is as follows:

In the 60s, Manny was upset that I chose to become a Federal

Agent, after receiving my Law Degree. At one point he made

me the following offer: "Leave the government, go into practise

and I will give you everything connected with Manny's Music as

your first client!!"

Sadly, I did not take advantage of Manny's more than kind and

thoughtful offer and to this day, I still think about what… Continue

My brother and I prepared for weeks in the summer of 1966 to make our first trip to the "city" from Astoria to see the guitars at Manny's.

My brother and I prepared for weeks in the summer of 1966 to make our first trip to the "city" from Astoria to see the guitars at Manny's. When we got there there was a Rickenbacker just like John Lennon's in the window and we knew we had found the place where our dreams were to become revealed! It took me two years but I bought my first Precision Bass on August 7, 1968 from Henry who was also tending to John Entwistle and Pete Townshend. They were playing the Schaefer Music Festival in Central… Continue

memories from (my uncle) Steve Chapin

Ah yes. . . Henry.  Always a hot experience for me at Manny's.It was there in the 70's (Harry with albums and Tom on tv with Make a Wish), that he referenced me as the "no-talent Chapin" one occasion while Tom and I were shopping there - it was actually very funny at the time, a Rodney Dangerfield moment.                                            But for the next two decades, every time I would drop $5K a pop for PA equipment, TEAC recorders, ADAT machines, Mackie boards, outboard gear,…See More
