My first guitar and amp...

It was in 1967 that my dad said to me "It's time to get you a good guitar." He was the local counsel for Musicians Union Local 802 in Manhattan and of course, they said to him "Take your boy to Manny's!" So, off we went.

The first thing you noticed were the photo's of every damn musical act imaginable. I spent many days looking at those walls over the years. The second thing I noticed was that standing 10 feet across the room was Garth Hudson from The Band. "Holy Crap!" my 13 year old… Continue

My son Grant and "The Great LES PAUL, Gibson, Epiphone, Sunburst with a Bigsby, Elevator Miracle.....EVER!"

When my son Grant was 12 or 13, graduating from middle school, we promised him a guitar. But he had a very specific guitar in mind..it had to be a Les Paul Epiphone, with a sunburst and a Bigsby Arm!

Our friend, a studio guitar player, had patiently trotted him over to Manny's and across the street to Sam Ash to play every guitar on the wall that came… Continue

1960's IMPERIAL ACCORDION ~ MINT!!! $325 SACRIFICE!!!

I bought this beautiful accordion from someone who had found it in their Grandfather's closet for $500 in 2007. It has remained in its plush case since I bought it. I was collecting instruments as I thought I might build a home recording studio. I have since had to sell everything related to the studio, and just realized that I still had this. I don't know much about accordions, except to say that this one is immaculate, and the straps and bellows are in excellent condition, which is rare in… Continue

Poetry in a time of confusion

When the seasons of mankind change and the certainties which once sustained us falter, it is to the

poets that we can turn...The questions which plague us are often the same dilemmas that poets have addressed since time begin counting itself in...

To read, to listen, to sing, to speak in the language of the heart requires nothing more (and nothing less) than a renewal and a recognition of our humanity...

Let the poets sing ! from Iran to Afghanistan, from Cuba to Croatia, from… Continue

So Many Memories...

The funniest memory (in retrospect) I have of Manny's is from September of 1976. I was living in Levittown, NY at the time, and I used to hitchhike into the city with my guitar all the time to play. I had no fear, and today you'd think even less sense, but this was a legitimate form of transportation in those days!. One night I got lucky though, and my friend Stevie Cochran arranged for me to ride into the city with his friend Brian. On the way downtown to the village, which is where I liked to… Continue

memories from (my uncle) Steve Chapin

Ah yes. . . Henry.  Always a hot experience for me at Manny's.It was there in the 70's (Harry with albums and Tom on tv with Make a Wish), that he referenced me as the "no-talent Chapin" one occasion while Tom and I were shopping there - it was actually very funny at the time, a Rodney Dangerfield moment.                                            But for the next two decades, every time I would drop $5K a pop for PA equipment, TEAC recorders, ADAT machines, Mackie boards, outboard gear,…See More
