I did a photo session at Manny's once with Suzi Quatro -- a tiny bassist buried

in a pile of bass guitars.

"A great store moving on, is it a sign of the times" by jacksoncsplayer

A great store moving on, is it a sign of the times?

Manny's Musical Instruments, a Midtown landmark since 1935, will close its doors forever at the end of May, and the remainder of the Music Row—as the block of W. 48th Street between Seventh and Sixth Avenues is affectionately known—may soon fall like a row of dominoes.

Following up on a reader's tip, I paid a call on Manny's today and was told by a staff member that the store would shutter at the end of the May. Manny's… Continue

I used to play hookie from PS 129 (junior high) on rainy days and take the subway down to Music Row and hang out at Manny's all day long.

Aloha, from AlohaChris

Bill, that is just staggeringly bad news! I can't imagine how unconscious the world has become to think that it kills off those pockets of life-force that are the very heart of what life is really all about! Sickening!

I grew up in NYC in the 60's. Bought all my early acoustic and electric guitars, banjos, Jew's harps, ukuleles and limberjacks at Manny's, Rudy's, Sam Ash and We Buy Guitars on 48th St.

Carlos Santana

Before the popularity of the electric guitar and before every teenager with a rock 'n' roll dream had a band in their garage, Manny's Music in New York City was providing the hardware for swing stars and big bands, and establishing itself as the place to go for the musician in the know. Besides being a garden of delight for musicians looking for the latest gear,... More Manny's became a center of activity where stories and tips were swapped among superstars and budding musicians alike. The Wall… Continue

Hendrix

"In 1966, Hendrix formed his own band, Jimmy James and The Blue Flames, composed of various friends he would casually meet at Manny's Music Shop, including a 15-year old runaway from California named Randy Wolfe. Since there were two musicians named "Randy" in the group, Hendrix dubbed Wolfe "Randy California" and the other "Randy Texas". Randy California would later co-found the band Spirit with Ed Cassidy."

memories from (my uncle) Steve Chapin

Ah yes. . . Henry.  Always a hot experience for me at Manny's.It was there in the 70's (Harry with albums and Tom on tv with Make a Wish), that he referenced me as the "no-talent Chapin" one occasion while Tom and I were shopping there - it was actually very funny at the time, a Rodney Dangerfield moment.                                            But for the next two decades, every time I would drop $5K a pop for PA equipment, TEAC recorders, ADAT machines, Mackie boards, outboard gear,…See More
