Todd, do you teach Slide Guitar?
I am an accomplished guitarist with a JAZZMASTER purchased at Manny's in 1967.
Would like to learn Slide? Can you help or refer someone?

Rather sad that this block on 48th street will never be the same. Besides purchasing my first guitar, a Dakota Red Fender Mustang at Manny's back in 1971, my fondest memory was meeting Peter Frampton there around 1974 and i believe it was Henry showing Peter the Pignose amp. Peter loved it and bought one. That day i had a chance to talk to Peter and it was a thrill as i was a big fan of Peter's music and his guitar playing. Peter was a true gentleman! Needless to say, i went back the following…

Hi Sandi,
It makes me smile the way I felt when Henry gave me my first "Schlepper" shirt.
I have to laugh when I notice people speaking about "Abruptness" at Manny's. Being Jewish and from New York I guess I understood it better than most. I begged for every "Schlepper" shirt I ever got. I might have been an important Road Manager in my head but to Henry I was just a Schlepper, basically a putz with the good luck to be in the Music Business. He always treated me like a Nephew that he…

Hi, Ian, and many thanks. Yes, of course this would be way back before both our times. But I just thought you'd have heard about the store, being in the family. Attached is a photo of a mute I own that has a Manny's store sticker to verify the Forsyth Street store. This is so strange! how no one remembers the store. Online, all I've found was a quote mentioning Manny's Forsyth store, taken form a 1930 publication, Rian James' Dining in New York.…

When my folks divorced my mom started going with this guy who claimed to have played bass with Jay and the Americans - he turned out to be a real louse but that's another story. We were living in Kennebunkport Maine when he decided we should all go down to New York for the weekend. This trip included a trip to Manny's. I remember standing there bug-eyed, staring at Hendrix's signed photo. A couple years later after a lot of begging and pleading I was told I could get 2 new top of the line Sonor…

It was in 1967 that my dad said to me "It's time to get you a good guitar." He was the local counsel for Musicians Union Local 802 in Manhattan and of course, they said to him "Take your boy to Manny's!" So, off we went.
The first thing you noticed were the photo's of every damn musical act imaginable. I spent many days looking at those walls over the years. The second thing I noticed was that standing 10 feet across the room was Garth Hudson from The Band. "Holy Crap!" my 13 year old…

When my son Grant was 12 or 13, graduating from middle school, we promised him a guitar. But he had a very specific guitar in mind..it had to be a Les Paul Epiphone, with a sunburst and a Bigsby Arm!
Our friend, a studio guitar player, had patiently trotted him over to Manny's and across the street to Sam Ash to play every guitar on the wall that came…

I bought this beautiful accordion from someone who had found it in their Grandfather's closet for $500 in 2007. It has remained in its plush case since I bought it. I was collecting instruments as I thought I might build a home recording studio. I have since had to sell everything related to the studio, and just realized that I still had this. I don't know much about accordions, except to say that this one is immaculate, and the straps and bellows are in excellent condition, which is rare in… Continue
