OK, here comes a memory from 1967. My band The Age Of Reason was booked to perform a show at The Loeb Student Center on LaGuardia Place. I had just bought a brand new 18" Paiste Cymbal, which was actually a very new company. Being a loyal Zildjian owner, I was dubious of this new cymbal product; but being a kid of great curiosity, I had to snatch the newest 'toys' in the drum product market at that time, and on that day, Paiste was it!
That night, I set my new Paiste cymbal on my left side, using it as my crash. Sometime during and halfway through our first set, I crashed the Paiste as part of the songs' arrangement and .......the Paiste cracked and broke off a 3" piece. Immediately I thought that I should have bought a good old trusty Zildjian; but there was something about that new cymbal, that I liked--It had a great tone.
The very next day, I brought the cracked Paiste cymbal back to Manny's where I had bought it the day before. In those day, I had always dealt with their salesman Danny, who, incidentally, was a good friend of my drum teacher, Danny Giordano, a protege' of Gene Krupa. I showed Danny the cracked cymbal. He immediately sent me to his boss, Manny, who had to OK this replacement. Manny, who knew me, took the cymbal out of my hand and spoke to me in the voice that Henry clearly inherited from him and loudly said: What did you use for drumsticks, tree trunks? He followed with his cool smile, a pat, and gave me a replacement--which never broke. I loved that man. He was so good to me. I was only 16 at the time--clearly learning my craft and the music biz simultaneously. Henry was great too. When I was touring the country playing bass with the Broadway musical Godspell, Henry would ship bass strings to me in cities across the country, ahead of time and planned so perfectly so that I wouldn't be without a clean set to use. Good people these Goldrichs are, and a rare breed.
Love, Larry Russell
