Jesus, that sucks. I visited Manny's and Sam Ash for the first time when I was
18. It was my first trip to "the city" and I was playing there as a wide-eyed
kid with no idea just what he was getting himself into. Visiting Music Row was
a religious experience for me.
I was back in NYC for the first time in quite a few years - playing again - last
year on two separate occasions. Both times, I went down to 48th Street and
wandered around the stores trying out instruments and talking shop with the
employees.
I worked in a music store in college, so those places - the old school
stores, not the sterile, Wal-Mart-esque Guitar Centers - are magical to me and
Manny's is the grandaddy of them all. I'm glad I got to visit one last time
last year. It will be bittersweet the next time I'm in NYC, knowing what I'll be
missing.
