Manny's used to be a legitimate, and important, reason to take the one-hour
train and tube ride from the northern Jersey burbs into the city. Then it grew
and became all of 48th Street. It was still the most likely place to breath the
intoxicating air of the rock hero, where all the boys with long hair and rock
dreams and the girls who felt the same pull, would go - a true street of dreams.
My teenagers still get a whiff of that at the local Guitar Center. But, just
like the music, it's watered down and marketed to death. Less about music, more
about the commercial potential, and only a part of a globalized, cableized
internet community.
But at least it's based on the transcendent musical inspirations of Elvis, Chuck
Berry, the Beatles, Stones, Who, Dylan and all the others who helped create and
inspire it in the first place.
