One of the regrets of my life is that I didn't spend more time visiting, observing, listening to the customers, and reliving the excitement I felt every time I approached the doors.
In 1963, I rode the train from Stamford to buy a 12-string guitar to match the 6-stringed Guild I had bought months before. Henry caught my glance and asked if I needed any help. I told him about the 12-string Guild. He said, "I gotta walk all the way upstairs to get the case; are you gonna buy it or not?" At first, being the little innocent red-haired lad from Connecticut, I was taken aback by his directness. Later I realized how much he had seen in the years and years of watching guitars, horns, and keyboards shuttle in and out of those doors. Henry knew I liked the guitar; he wanted to know how badly I wanted it.The%20Malibus_RETOUCHED.jpgBlog My Memory (?)tag:mannysmusic.ning.com,2011-05-15:3071127:BlogPost:158652011-05-15T01:04:22.000ZElliott Randallhttps://mannysmusic.ning.com/profile/ElliottRandall

More to come on the Academy's dropping instrumental categories. The reaction has been predictable, outrage. I am compiling some of those reactions and will have them for you soon. I know that the people resposible have been given the truth about who we are. They are not pleased. Meanwhile WHO ARE WE? This forward says it nicely: MM

The rep responds… "Let me suggest that you call the plumbers' union and ask for six plumbers to work from six to midnight on a Saturday night. Whatever they charge you, we'll work for half!"
In 1972 I was 19 years old, and had a chance to sub on the Broadway show, "Grease". Cliff Morris and Bob Rose, the guitarists on the show, told me I had the wrong electric guitar for the show's sound. "Go to Manny's" they said, "and tell Henry you need a Telecaster." It was a Saturday, and I went right over and asked for Henry. The store was jammed. I introduced myself, told him who had sent me and he smiled, saying that they were nice guys. He must have taken pity on a young kid, because he didn't yell at me when I plugged the guitar in to try it out. $189.00 later I was all set for Broadway. That level of professional care and camaraderie never ceased throughout the thirty-five+ years of my career. The whole Goldrich family became friends over the years and treated me like one of their own. I got to the shop before
it opened (since i was supposed to be in SCHOOL!) and waited outside,
gazing thru the window at all the treasures inside. a few minutes... See More
later, Henry opened the door and let me in. while I was looking at
several SGs on the wall, the front door opened again, and in walked Al
Kooper!!!! if I remember right he was checking out a Paisley Tele, and
Henry was helping both of us... I was playing a really nice SG Std, but
it was a little bit out of my price range, and Henry asked how much
money i had, and disapeared into the elevator for a few minutes, and
when he came back he handed me a hardshell Gibson case with a cherry
red, 1967 SG Special inside. I played it for a few minutes, Al Kooper
"approved', and Henry sold it to me for $175 tax incl. Many guitars and
many more trips back to Mannys since, i always had very fond memories
for Henry and Mannys, a great store! (one other time on another "school
trip" i got to meet "The Hermits" sans Herman right outside Mannys
front door!!)....peace.

Rather sad that this block on 48th street will never be the same. Besides purchasing my first guitar, a Dakota Red Fender Mustang at Manny's back in 1971, my fondest memory was meeting Peter Frampton there around 1974 and i believe it was Henry showing Peter the Pignose amp. Peter loved it and bought one. That day i had a chance to talk to Peter and it was a thrill as i was a big fan of Peter's music and his guitar playing. Peter was a true gentleman!
When my son Grant was 12 or 13, graduating from middle school, we promised him a guitar. But he had a very specific guitar in mind..it had to be a Les Paul Epiphone, with a sunburst and a Bigsby Arm!

Our friend, a studio guitar player, had patiently trotted him over to Manny's and across the street to Sam Ash to play every guitar on the wall that came close to the specifications. There was a sunburst with no Bigsby (above) and there was a blue one with a Bigsby which we reluctantly put on hold until the big day...his graduation.
For weeks he pleaded, "Please mom, can I have the guitar" but no, it was a graduation present .....end of story!

A week before the 'big day', Grant and I get in the elevator of my building, and I guy get on with a guitar case, a guy had not seen before then, nor since.....

"Is that a Les Paul?" I said exuding more knowledge than I had data to back up. "Yes" he said drolly. When we reached the ground floor he opened the case, and lo and behold...it was the very guitar, the dream spec guitar...the Les Paul Epiphone with a sunburst AND a Bigsby arm! Not only was the guitar for sale, some odd job lot the guy had gotten off of ebay....but it was the same price as the one we had laid away.
Well the greatest guitar story of all time (certainly in Grant's life) doesn't end there....

Now the best part about this next bit, when i interviewed Les Paul below with Joey Reynolds...Joey told him the story of what happened next.

So I knew that Les played at the Iridium every Monday night and that he signed guitars after the show, so Grant and I to the 'axe' up there the next Monday and Les signed it...To Grant Keep Pickin, Les Paul" but as he finished it, his sleeve smeared the marker and the signature was blurred. I mean only cause I'm OCD Mom did it bother me.

Now the fun begins, I call Gibson and wind up going to their luthier in Times Square and he tries to take the signature off, but it won't budge and then he says, let me try one more thing, and I don't know but it was a simple thing and voila, it was clean....so Grant and I schlepped, yet again, to The Iridium and Les signed the guitar for a second time and this one we sealed in some plastic stuff so it's there forever.

But it's such a great story and I'm so grateful I was able to interview Les on the Joey Reynolds Show in 2005 when he was 90...if there was ever an argument for Joyful Aging...it was Les Paul.

In my humble opinion, Les Paul single handedly invented rock and roll. I got to tell him, when, as a girl in Hollywood, listening to the radio it was what was called, "Popular Music"...and then one day, I heard Les Paul and Mary Ford, "How High The Moon" and I was hooked on Rock and Roll for the next 50 years!

Sandi: Thank you so much for giving us a chance to honor the people and the place that gave so many musicians an opportunity to conjure up sounds, magic and love.

For about six months, I walked dogs for fifty cents a walk - day & night - before & after school - as many as I could take at once. My math may be fuzzy - but I think I had to pull together about $400 to cover my half. Someone here in virtual Manny land will set me straight on that purchase price.

After buying the kit, I learned that the Goldrich family were members of the same temple we attended in New Jersey - putting me one step closer to greatness.

Like any teenage kid, I could bitch and complain about my parents with the best of them - but the fact that they put me in position to get this thunder machine - and then practice and play it IN OUR APARTMENT - is evidence enough that they loved my fat little face.

The kit made it out of our apartment and into the basement of Rafael Orsini - where his parents allowed us to put several bands together over a period of years and actually make it out for the occasional gig.

Early years chasing sound led to later lives led in radio, music television, music films and new media, where I get to keep chasing dreams with people like Don Was in my own little version of fantasy-land at http://www.MyDamnChannel.com.

Thank you Sandi for the chance to say thank you again with respect to everyone in Manny's family for giving brats like me a chance to turn Rock & Roll fantasies into real life realities.
Keeping this short will be hard...
My first trip to Manny's was back in 1976. I waited at the counter forever, but nobody paid me any attention. I was working with Harry Belafonte at the time and told the other guitarist Scott Kuney about what had happened. Back we went to the store. When Irene and Billy saw Scott, who was already a seasoned pro customer, they talked to him immediately. He proceeded to introduce me to everybody behind the counter. When Irene and Billy saw Scott, who was already a seasoned pro customer, they talked to him immediately. He proceeded to introduce me to everybody behind the counter. I never had to wait again - I was "in". Over the years they all became mine and my wife's extended family - Ian, Judd, Henry, Stuart, Billy, Irene...We loved them all. One year my wife PEGGI BLU bought me a leather gig bag, and they let her in the back to go through all the cases to find a blue one - customers weren't even allowed back there, but we weren't just customers - we were family. When Peggi won Grand Prize on the TV show "Star Search", the first thing we did was head to Manny's to buy the Tascam 388 recorder I had been hungrily staring at in the window all year. We took that machine with us to California to make the demos for our Capitol Records recording. That machine got me started producing records. It's a real shame that upcoming generations will never know the feeling of being in that store with all that musical history surrounding you. Actually, "store" is not the proper word for the place - "Home To All Musicians & Singers" is a better term. God bless everybody who has ever worked in there - they made all our lives warmer and richer.
Goldie and The Gingerbreads and all the bands of the 60's especially the ones that played bars around NYC like the Peppermint Lounge, Ungano's Wagon Wheel, Trudy Hellers would have been nothing without this mom and pop store, Manny's.
was great, we always felt like we were coming home when we walked in, for many years it was the place to hang, find new musicians for bands, and just hang.....our pix on the walls, and the personal touch sort of like walking into a 'musical Cheer's' Wow, I will…

Dear Henry,
Here is the Martin D-28 you hand-picked for me in 1969. It was a
lucky choice and I keep it in perfect condition. Millions of Bob
Dylan fans hear this guitar on the opening notes of "Tangled Up In
Blue." Thank you for personally helping me pick out this instrument
-- I came all the way from Minnesota to buy it especially from you.
