My brother and I knew Jimi. My brother's group played on the same card before Jimi in Ohio. We were all back stage together. He liked my brother's group so he came over to the house and stayed most of the night. I also was with Jimi at the Filmore East as his guest. This was back in 1968. My brother's poster of his group playing on the same card with Jimi is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Hendrix shrine. I bought a Gibson EB-3 and a SUNN 200S bass amp w/ 2 D-140 Lansings from Mannys…

In 1972 I was 19 years old, and had a chance to sub on the Broadway show, "Grease". Cliff Morris and Bob Rose, the guitarists on the show, told me I had the wrong electric guitar for the show's sound. "Go to Manny's" they said, "and tell Henry you need a Telecaster." It was a Saturday, and I went right over and asked for Henry. The store was jammed. I introduced myself, told him who had sent me and he smiled, saying that they were nice guys. He must have taken pity on a young kid, because he…

I was on 48th street checking out the music stores with an old pal, jingle writer Johnny Barranco. I needed a piano pickup for the night club on Long Island where I was working and had come to "Music Row" to buy it - corporate check in hand. John went across the street to another store first and we agreed to meet up at Manny's. I went into the store on my own and got the pickup, but when I presented the company check at the register, Henry said, "

I arrived at Manny's in NYC in 1959 and bought my first real drumset, a white marine pearl 1958 WFL 4 piece 10 ply maple shell set . It's still my favorite drum set to play on and everyone loves the way it sounds even to this day!! Manny, Danny and all the other wonderful folks behind the various counters always made me feel welcome. They were always pointing out all the… Continue

All the equipment you see in this picture of my band, The Malibus, from Stamford Connecticut, was purchased before 1963 at Manny's; the Slingerland drums, the two Ampeg amps, one for the guitars and one for the vocals, the Fender Jaguar, Guild Starfire, and the Gretch guitars.
Henry, Stuart, and all the Manny's family were as legendary as the celebrated musicians we'd come to see and talk to. One of the regrets of my life is that I didn't spend more time visiting, observing, listening to…

"Tears.... Manny, Henry, Stewart... memories of a time so vivid and exciting. Manny's! The place to see and be seen. The loving tolerance of young and old musicians plunking pianos, strumming guitars, screaming solos, beating drums... all at the same time. A most delicious chaos of famous talent and wish to be's.
My first visit was in 1961 when Buddy Rich…

"My first visit to Manny's was when I was 18. It was my first summer semester at Berklee School of Music. I was told by my Sax teacher Bill Pierce I needed to buy a Selmer Saxaphone and that my old student band model just wouldn't do anymore. I came to Manny's…
