THE VIRTUAL WALL OF FAME

"We loved going in and doing business knowing "We were in the company of the greeats when we gazed at all the autographed photos on the wall of fame!"

I got my first good acoustic from Manny's in 1975. A 1975 Ovation Balladeer model 1112-1. The second one they came out with. Loved that guitar and had it redone recently thanks to saving my Manny's original hand written bill! Professional or amateur, the guys at Manny's took real good care of you and every year I brought my ax back for an adjustment.. no hassle. We loved going in and doing business knowing we were in the company of the greeats when we gazed at all the autographed photos on the wall of fame!

I've been living in the Midwest for 14 years (my occupation brought me here). But, while growing up in Norwalk, Connecticut, it was a little something of an event back in the day, taking the train into Grand Central, and walking over to W. 48th Street (best when the weather was nice), and upon approaching Manny's, first taking in what was on display in the store window, before entering not just a music store but, (to a kid still well of high school age, what in retrospect seemed to be) an "experience like nothing else." I remember at that time, the guitars and basses were locked in showcases. During my visits there, some of the salesmen wouldn't let you just "plug in & play" if they suspected you weren't really going to BUY that guitar (remember, not being a "star" who bought gear by the truckload, why should I be given preferential treatment? But, I digress) No biggie. It was 40 years ago this summer I bought a Vox Tone Bender and Wah-Wah pedal from Manny's and my musician friends would make bigger purchases from Manny's over the years. I guess to an amateur musician, buying almost anything from there made a statement.
In 2006, my girlfriend and I made two seperate trips to the City, and I made it a point to go back to Manny's for a visit. This time, all I walked away with from there was a souvenir tee-shirt (its personal value now priceless), and some wonderful memories of a meaningful point in my life. I was saddend to hear about Manny's closing. Which makes me all the happier I took advantage of those last chances to visit the store when I did!

memories from (my uncle) Steve Chapin

Ah yes. . . Henry.  Always a hot experience for me at Manny's.It was there in the 70's (Harry with albums and Tom on tv with Make a Wish), that he referenced me as the "no-talent Chapin" one occasion while Tom and I were shopping there - it was actually very funny at the time, a Rodney Dangerfield moment.                                            But for the next two decades, every time I would drop $5K a pop for PA equipment, TEAC recorders, ADAT machines, Mackie boards, outboard gear,…See More
